10 Uses For Cobalt
1) Cobalt is used to stain windows, porcelain, glass, and pottery blue.
2) Cobalt is used in jet engines because it has a very high melting point of 2723 degrees Fahrenheit
3) Like jet engine it is also in car engines
4) It is in high speed cutting tools
5) It is needed in proper nutrition
6) It is used in medicine to destroy cancerous tissue
7) It is used in color television

THE DISCOVERY
Cobalt was discovered in 1735 when Swedish chemist Georg Brandt was trying to prove the ability of certain minerals to color glass blue. At the time people believed that the element that colored glass blue was Bismuth and not Cobalt. Gerog Brandt manage to prove that that is not true.

COOL FACTS
1) The word Cobalt comes from the German word Goblin or the Greek word Mine
2) Cobalt found in mines is poisonous but it has many important minerals such as nickel or copper
3) In Ancient times Cobalt was used as jewelry
4) Cobalt can be magnetized
5) Powdered cobalt is flammable

WHY COBALT IS IMPORTANT
Cobalt is important for many reasons. Without cobalt we would not have colored television or car engines or many other advances in technology today. Cobalt also provides proper nutrition and is in many foods. Cobalt is also important because it has a high melting point which makes it very durable. This useful for metals that are exposed to very high temperatures a car or jet engines. Without cobalt we wouldn't be as advanced as we are today.
