BISMUTH (BI)
Introduction
Bismuth is number 83 on the periodic table of elements. One atom of bismuth contains 83 protons, 83 electrons
and 126 neutrons. It's atomic mass is 208.98040. Bismuth is a solid element that is classified as a metal.
Bismuth is a geode that is a silver white on the outside, and a metallic multi-toned color on the inside.

Discovery/Naming
It is not known when bismuth was first discovered or who first discovered it, but we do know that people knew about it in the 15th century. It was not until 1753 in France that it was established by Claude Geoffroy the Younger that it is not a form of lead, it is it's own element. The name bismuth comes from the two German words weisse and masse which mean "white mass." This is because bismuth appears this way in nature. Weissemasse was shortend to wismuth, which eventually changed into what we know as bismuth.
Physical Properties
1.) Bismuth is a geode that is a silver white on the outside, and a metallic multi-toned color on the inside.
2.)Bismuth is a metal. 3.)Like water, bismuth expands when it solidifies. |
4.) Melting point = 520.34 F. (271.3 C.) (which is much lower than other metals).
5.) It's density is 9.807 grams (per cubic centimeter). |
Uses
1.) Pepto-Bismol
2.) Some eye drops that are used to treat eye infections 3.)Bi-213 (a certain bismuth isotope) can be used to help treat patients with leukemia cancer 4.) Some ceramic glazes to make the clay appear to change colors as you tilt it |
5.) Bismuth telluride (bismuth and tellurium) is used in some refrigerators to keep things cool
6.) In places where lead bullets are banned, it is used as a replacement bullet in guns 7.) Bismuth is used in nail polish to make them glitery 8.) Bismuth makes a beautiful pendant on a necklace |
