Iodine Discovery
In 1811 when Bernard Courtois discovered iodine, he was not searching for a way to heal his fellow humans. Ironicly he was looking for a way to kill his fellow humans.During the French Revolution Napoleon’s army at the time required huge quantities of gunpowder and supplies were running short. Saltpeter is a major component in gunpowder and requires an abundant source of potassium carbonate in order to be manufactured. Potassium carbonate is extracted from wood ashes, but the war had gone on so long that they’d run out of willow wood, the preferred source. Someone suggested using dried seaweed (burnt to ash), which seemed to be abundant off the coasts of Normandy and Brittany. The suggestion worked and the French were back in business, making gunpowder and killing people.
Iodine Uses
- To treat thyroid cancer
- In some salts
- To boost metabolism
- To treat bacterial infections
- To help a persons neurological health
- Used in eye health
- It is a strong antioxident
- Skin health
- Hair health
Iodine Fun Facts
- Iodine can most commonly be found in seaweed
- The human body needs iodine to live
- If highly compressed and heated it can be turned into a gas
Iodine Gas
This is the result of heated and compressed iodine. This process also is timely since it changes from a solid to a gas. Also, during the process you also get small amounts of iodine liquid (which is also purple).
